Tour Description

North Annapurna Base Camp Trek, also known as North ABC Trek is an off-the-beaten-path journey into the raw, untouched Himalayas. Less crowded than the classic routes, this trek offers trekkers pristine trails, hidden valleys, and unobstructed views of towering snow peaks. Its actual name is the Maurice Herzog Trail; however, currently, it’s commonly popular as the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek among people.

Located in the remote northern corridor, this trek circles the sacred Annapurna range and reaches North Annapurna Base Camp. Along the way, trekkers pass through ancient villages, rhododendron forests, glacial rivers, and rugged alpine terrain.

Currently, there are tent hotels operated by the locals at each point along the route for your accommodation. They provide simple meal options for now.  Nevertheless, this virgin trail is set to be officially opened on June 3, 2025. After its opening ceremony, there might be an increase in tea houses and other facilities.

Local Villages and Traditions

Most settlements along the North ABC route are home to Gurung and Magar ethnic groups.
These proud mountain communities have preserved their distinct traditions, languages, and architecture for generations.

Walking through villages like Upper Narchyang, you’ll notice sturdy stone houses with thick slate roofs, built to withstand harsh mountain weather.
Elderly residents sit weaving baskets while children herd goats along dusty trails, a daily rhythm unchanged for centuries.

Don’t be surprised if a smiling villager offers you a cup of butter tea or invites you to sit by the fire.

Spiritual Life in the Annapurna Region

Religion shapes the landscape as much as the mountains themselves.
Colorful prayer flags flutter across high ridges, sending blessings into the sky with every breeze.
You’ll pass whitewashed Buddhist stupas (chortens) and long walls of carved prayer stones (mani walls), marking sacred spots.

Locals believe the Annapurna Sanctuary is protected by mountain deities.
Respect for the land is strong , even gathering firewood is done carefully, with permission from the spirits of the forest.

Pro Tip: Always walk clockwise around prayer monuments as a sign of respect, following the local Buddhist tradition.

Festivals and Celebrations

If your North ABC Trek falls in October or November, you might witness Nepal’s biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar.
During these times, villages come alive with music, colorful decorations, and joyful ceremonies.

Springtime also brings local harvest festivals, where families gather to celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of warmer days.
Joining even a small celebration will add unforgettable memories to your trek.
