What are The Best Viewpoints In The Langtang Region

Langtang trek is full of natural beauty and offers best views of the Himalayas. Here are some of the best viewpoints in the Langtang Region listed below:

Tserko Ri

Tserko Ri is the highest point of the Langtang Valley Trek and the highest viewpoint in the entire region, located at 5,033 m (16,500 ft). From here, you can witness the panoramic views of the peaks in the Langtang Mountain Range, such as:

  • Langtang Lirung (7,234 m/23,734 ft)
  • Langtang Ri (7,205 m/23,638 ft)
  • Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m/22,854 ft)
  • Loenpo Gang (6,979 m/22,897 ft)
  • Tsangbu Ri (6,781 m/22,247 ft),
  • Glacial Valleys below, etc.

Its visit happens during the acclimatisation day in the Kyanjin Gompa (3,830 m/12,565.62 ft), a highly Tibetan Buddhist-influenced village in the Langtang Trek. It typically takes 4 to 5 hours of hiking, depending on your pace, to reach.

It is a bit challenging to reach the summit due to the altitude. You need to ascend the steep section all the way to the summit. As a result, mostly experienced hikers choose this point to enjoy the morning view of the mountains and valleys from the top.

Kyanjin Ri

There are two viewpoints in the Langtang Valley Trek, and Kyanjin Ri, situated at 4,400 m (14,435 ft), is another viewpoint that can be reached in around 2 hours of hiking from Kyanjin Gompa. You will receive similar views to those from Tserko Ri as a reward after making up to the top. Nevertheless, the views of the mountains feel a bit more distant compared to those from Tserko Ri.

Since it is lower in height than Tseko Ri, most first-timers choose this one to experience the morning views of the Langtang Range. About the trail, here also, you need to ascend until you reach the top.

Langshisa Kharka

Langshisa Kharka (meadow) is a remote high-elevation field, situated at around 4,250 m (13,943.57 ft). It goes through Kyanjin Gompa. During the process, you’ll cover 10 to 12 km (one-way) and take approximately 4.5 hours of walking to reach.

Speaking of the route, it is not that technical. You will just ascend 110 m (360.8 ft) from Kyanjin Gompa. Upon reaching there, you will get to see the peaks in the Langtang Range. It’s also believed to be a spiritual hub, where locals mostly visit during winter to meditate when the glacier is frozen.

Laurebina La

Laurebina La (Pass) is located between the Langtang Valley and the Helambu Region at 4,610 m (15,125 ft). It is like a gateway that connects the Langtang Trek to the Gosainkunda Trek.

The pass offers breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung (7,234 m/23,734 ft), Yangra (7,422 m/24,350 ft) of Ganesh Himal Range, Manaslu (8,163 m/26,759 ft) of Mansiri Range, and other peaks of the Annapurna Range. It is considered a holy trail for both Hindus and Buddhists. It mostly has traffic on the occasion of the festival, Janai Purnima, in August.

Ganja La

Ganja La (Pass) is a remote section and technically demanding to cross. It is located in the southeast of Kyanjin Gompa at an altitude of 5,130m/16830ft.

Crossing the pass takes you to the Helambu Region. The Ganja La Pass trek is not recommended for beginners but is manageable with proper preparation and guidance. A trek enthusiast with few with high altitude trek experience can easily do this trek.

Along the way, there’s no availability of accommodation, which is why camping is necessary. The pass offers amazing views of Langtang Lirung, Shishapangma, and Helambu ridge.

Ghoda Tabela

Ghoda Tabela is also a meadow situated on the trail between Lama Hotel and Langtang Village on the Langtang Valley Trek. It stands at an elevation of 2,992 m (9,816.273 ft). Its name means horse stable in English.

It’s the resting point where most trekkers choose to take a break here to observe the beautiful views of Langtang Lirung and Tersko Ri from a distance, and the Langtang River flowing below. The area is also occupied by oak, bamboo, and rhododendron forests, making it rich in biodiversity.

Gosainkunda Lake

Gosainkunda Lake is a famous trekking destination and also one of the top pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists in Nepal. It sits at an altitude of 4,380 m (14,370.08 ft) and usually takes three days to reach by going through Laurebina Pass.

Gosaikunda Lake

You’ll be stunned by seeing the reflection of the peaks, Langtang Lirung and Yangra, in the lake. On top, there isn’t only Gosainkunda in the name of a holy lake. There are a total of 108 glacial lakes in the area.

Among them, Bhairav Kunda, Nag Kunda, Surya Kunda, Saraswati Kunda, and Dudh Kunda are other notable neighbouring lakes in the area. Devotees mostly visit these lakes during the Janai Purnima Festival.

Inorder to visit this destination you can do the short Gosainkunda Lake Trek or combine the Langtnag Valley Trek with Gosainkunda and do it in one time.

Nagthali

Nagthali is the highest point of the Tamang Village Trek, situated at 3,165 m (10,383.86 ft). It’s a combination of the typical Tamang villages: Gatlang, Goljung, Tatopani, Thuman, and Briddim.

It comes along the way from Tatopani to Thuman. It’s the viewpoint of the trek, offering magnificent views of the peaks in the Langtang and Ganesh Himal Ranges, and even partial views of Tibet.

How Is The Accommodation In The Langtang Region

Tserko Ri, Kyanjin Ri, Langshisa Kharka, and Ganja La can be reached from Kyanjin Gompa, the last stop of the Langtang Valley Trek, while Ghoda Tabela lies along the way. You don’t need to worry about finding proper accommodation during this adventure.

From the starting point, Syabrubesi, to the last point, Kyanjin Gompa,  there are several hotels and tea houses available. All of them provide clean rooms and modern facilities, such as electricity, internet, and a hot shower. They, however, charge a small fee for the use of the internet and a hot shower.

The other best viewpoints in the Langtang Region are Laurebina La and Gosainkunda Lake on the Gosainkunda Trek, and Nagthali on the Tamang Heritage Trek. These trails also have enough hotels along the route and provide the same facilities as on the Langtang Trek to make your journey hassle-free.

Useful Tips

To enjoy your journey to the fullest in remote and high-altitude locations like the Langtang Region, you’ll need to have some basic knowledge about what you should do and what not during the trek. Some useful tips that you should be following for good are listed below:

  • Pack essential gear for hiking in your backpack that is enough for your trip, such as a sporty t-shirt and trekking pants, quality boots, a cap, a buff mask, trekking poles, normal socks, a water bottle, and a raincoat.
  • A normal t-shirt, trousers, a high-neck, a down jacket (for at least -15°C), a thermal set, gloves, a woollen hat, and slippers or shoes for night stay. Also, pack toiletries.
  • Ascend gradually, no need to rush, and consider taking breaks of at least 7-8 minutes frequently to allow your body time to adjust to the lower oxygen level while hiking.
  • Spend an extra day in the same place after finally reaching up to 3,000 m (9,842.52 ft) to acclimate your body.
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Drink at least 3 litres a day. Also, eat foods that contain a high amount of water, such as cucumbers and apples.
  • Eat foods that are rich in carbohydrates, such as rice, potatoes, pasta, etc. These take time to digest, giving you energy for a long time while hiking.
  • Avoid over-fried, oily, and non-vegetarian foods, as they may cause you food poisoning.
  • Start doing daily exercise for at least an hour daily, a month before the date of your trek. Some best workouts are stretching, swimming, cycling, running, and squatting.
  • Buy acetazolamide (brand name Diamox) to avoid altitude sickness under the prescription of your doctor if you aren’t feeling confident.
  • Eat a piece of garlic every day in the morning, or add garlic soup with timur (Sichuan Pepper) powder to your meal during the trek. Garlic and timur also help you fight altitude sickness.
