Introduction

Mardi Himal Trek is a beautiful trek in the Annapurna region that takes you to the Base Camp of Mardi Himal (4,500m/14,763ft). Because of its short yet rewarding nature, trekkers often prefer this hike.

If you are looking for an alternative to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek with fewer crowds, then the Mardi Himal hike would be a great option. The Mardi trail offers breathtaking mountain views of the Annapurna range, lush green Rhododendron forests, and high alpine meadows.

You reach the starting point of the trek with just a two-hour drive from the beautiful city of Pokhara. The Mardi trek can be completed within 5 days, starting from Pokhara and returning to Pokhara.

Mardi Himal trek rewards trekkers with breathtaking views of Mardi Himal, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, and Hiunchuli. These mountains can be witnessed from a very close distance, making the Mardi trek one of the easiest but rewarding treks.

This family-friendly trek is suitable for beginners and kids, as the trails are well-maintained with no problem with food and accommodation throughout the trek. If you are looking to walk with ease and reduce the hiking duration each day, you can extend the itinerary up to a week.

The Mardi Himal Trek is not just a trail, it’s a journey through shifting worlds. It begins gently, with mossy trails winding through ancient rhododendron forests, where the sunlight filters in soft golden beams and the air smells of pine and damp earth. As you rise higher, the trees give way to windswept ridges, and the silence deepens. No traffic, no chatter, just the rustle of prayer flags and the crunch of your boots on the trail.

The walk starts from the scenic village of Kande, followed by Forest Camp, Mardi High Camp, and the marvellous Mardi Base Camp/viewpoint. The daytime temperatures are very mild and perfect for walks during the peak season.

Although considered an easy-moderate trek, as you gain altitude, you can notice the drop in temperature. At the highest point (4,200m), trekkers may even feel lightheaded because of altitude sickness.

Mardi Himal Base Camp

The Mardi Himal Base Camp is the major highlight of the trek.

Located at an altitude of 4,500m in the Northern Kaski district, this remote viewpoint offers one of the most surreal panoramas in the Himalayas without the crowds. No amount of description and photos can provide justice to the beauty observed from here when the morning sun rays hit the mountains. You need to be there by yourself, along with perfect weather and timing.

Reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp is not just about elevation; it’s about transcendence. The trail climbs from mossy rhododendron forests into windswept alpine ridges. As you gain altitude, the views unfold dramatically: Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) looms so close it feels like you could touch it, and to the west, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli dominate the horizon.

By the time you reach Base Camp, you’re standing on a ridge that offers 360-degree views of some of the tallest mountains on Earth, without needing ropes or crampons.

There are no tea houses at Base Camp itself, just prayer flags, rock cairns, and open silence, but that’s part of the magic. Trekkers usually spend some time there for sunrise or a packed breakfast, then descend back to High or Low Camp.

Mardi Himal

Quick Overview

  • Elevation: 5,587 meters (18,330 feet)
  • Location: Annapurna region, north-central Nepal
  • Range: Part of the Annapurna Massif in the Himalayas
  • Coordinates: ~28.483° N, 83.956° E
  • First Ascent: 1961 by a team led by Basil Goodfellow (British expedition)

Tucked quietly into the shadows of the mighty Annapurna Range, Mardi Himal (5,587m/18,330ft) is one of Nepal’s most overlooked yet mesmerizing Himalayan peaks. Mardi Himal is considered a satellite peak of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and lies just east of it. It is the southernmost peak of the Annapurna range.

Its name, “Mardi,” means “wooded hill,” a fitting tribute to the lush rhododendron forests and moss-covered ridges that lead toward its base.

Unlike its more famous neighbor, Machhapuchhre, which is off-limits to climbers, Mardi Himal has been successfully climbed and offers a technical but achievable peak for experienced climbers.

Basil Goodfellow was the first guy to summit the peak in 1961. Later, other climbers summited the peak, and the Mardi Trek route was opened by following a ridge towards the summit of Mardi Himal in 2012. The Mardi Mountain is gaining popularity because of the beautiful Mardi Himal trekking route.

While it’s not one of Nepal’s most commonly climbed peaks, Mardi Himal is classified as a "trekking peak" by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). The climb requires proper gear, glacier travel, and some technical climbing, especially in the upper sections.

Unlike Everest or Annapurna I, which attract climbers and trekkers from all over the world, Mardi Himal remains a peaceful giant—less commercialized, less explored, and deeply sacred to locals.

Outline Itinerary (5 Days Mardi Himal Trek Starting from Pokhara):

  • Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Kande, then trek to Pitam Deurali.
  • Day 2: Pitam Deurali to Low Camp.
  • Day 3: Low Camp to High Camp.
  • Day 4: High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) and return to Low Camp
  • Day 5: Trek down to Shiding Village and drive back to Pokhara.

Best Time for Short Mardi Himal Trek

Autumn (Sept, Oct, Nov) and Spring (March, April, May) seasons are considered to be the best times for the Mardi Himal Trek. Not only for Mardi, but these seasons are good for all treks in Nepal. These seasons tend to offer mild temperatures with clear skies. The forests are covered with green and colorful flowers.

We don’t recommend this trek during the monsoon (mid-June, July, and August), because the views are often blocked by clouds and the trails are mostly slippery. The reward may not be worth it at the end of this season.

That being said, if you love walking in the rain with cool climate and little to no crowds, you may opt for this hike during the monsoon as well.

How Difficult is the Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal trek is considered to be between an easy to moderately challenging trek, depending upon the fitness level of an individual. If you are a beginner or a first-time hiker, you won’t have any problem completing this trek.

Although it’s a short and relatively easy trek, it still consists of a few technical and challenging sections, which can enhance the level of adventure during the trek. Most of the trail sections are maintained by ACAP, so you don’t have to worry safety-wise. That being said, you still need to be careful during the ascents and descents, especially during the monsoon and winter.

You’ll walk 4-5 hours per day on average during the Mardi Himal Trek. Since you’ll be reaching an altitude of 4,500m, you may encounter symptoms of Altitude sickness as well. In case of such symptoms, you need to inform your guide or the trekking agency immediately.

Your physical and mental fitness plays a vital role as well, so we recommend simple exercises, walks, and the gym before heading on the journey.

Detailed Itinerary

Meals:

L, D

The 5-Day Mardi Himal Trek starts from the beautiful city, Pokhara. Your assigned guide will come to pick you up at your hotel in Pokhara (near Lakeside), and from there we will get in a private vehicle to Kande. The drive to Kande from Pokhara is a beautiful journey and takes about 1 hour to reach there.

Our actual trek on foot starts from Kande. After about an hour of hiking, we reach a beautiful settlement known as (Australian Camp). Australian Camp (2,060m) is a popular destination for hiking especially suitable for people who are looking to do a short hike and get a taste of local culture.

As we pass by the village, we will be welcomed by Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, South Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and other peaks in the range.

After the village, we enter a lush green forest, offering a pleasant environment for hiking. As the forest ends, we get into another village named Pothana. From there, after another hour, we finally reach Pitam Deurali.

Pitam Deurali is a beautiful local village settled between Annapurna South and Mardi Himal. This place offers magnificent views of the Annapurna range. As we reach Pitam Deurali, your guide will take you to your respective teahouse, where we check in and relax for the day.

Meals:

B, L, D

After a warm breakfast at our teahouse in Deurali, we start our hike as early as possible. Morning hikes tend to be pleasant as you get clear mountain views and the sun is not on top of your head. Usually, we leave our tea house around 7:30 am.

As we leave Deurali, we enter a less crowded trail. Today's hike is pleasant and full of walks through the jungles and greenery. During the spring, the forests are decorated with colorful flowers such as Rhododendron and other sub-alpine flowers.

As we traverse through the jungle, if lucky we may get an opportunity to catch few glimpse of wildlife of the conservation area such as Himalayan Thar, Spotted Deer, Snow Leopard, Musk Deer etc.

As we gain altitude we start to see change in the biodiversity and landscapes.

After 4-5 hrs of hiking from Deurali we reach Forest Camp, where we will be staying overnight for the day.

We have our dinner and head towards our room to be prepared for the next day.

Meals:

B, L, D

After a good rest at Forest camp, we have our breakfast as usual at our teahouse and get ready for our trek to Mardi High Camp. Today's journey starts with a magnificent view of Mt. Machhapuchhre and Annapurna.

Since we will gain significant altitude today, trekkers may find today's hike a little challenging than usual. As we walk along the ridge to Mardi Base Camp, the route can get technical with steep and rocky trails. This enhances the adventure during the trek, with high motivation and mindset we continue our journey.

With glamorous views of the Himalayas like Mardi, Annapurna, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre right in front of you, you feel even more motivated and excited to reach the top.

After about 7 hours of hiking we finally reached the High Camp, Our final destination for today.

We check in our tea house and relax throughout the evening. Today we must have a good rest as we need to wake up very early tomorrow in order to see the sunrise peeking through the Mountains.

Meals:

B, L, D

Today we have to wake up early around 4 am and instantly get ready for a hike to the viewpoint and Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). We get our day packs with a head torch and start ascending.

After 2 hours of walking uphill on stairs, we reach the Mardi View Point and wait for the sunrise.

The view from the viewpoint is rewarding with mesmerizing views of the Annapurna Range. You get to see the Mardi Himal just before the Mighty Machhapuchhre.

Since the view from the viewpoint is almost similar to the base camp, some trekkers tend to fall back from here.

However, for trekkers who want to hike an extra mile, they can hike for an extra hour and make it all the way up to Mardi Himal Base Camp. This hike is about 4-5 hours in total till we go back to our teahouse; however, if you hike just halfway up to the Mardi viewpoint, you can reduce the difficulty and won’t miss out much regarding the views.

After returning to the teahouse at High Camp, we have our breakfast and relax for a while, and get ready for our descent.

We retrace our steps back to Low Camp for tonight’s stay. The hike from High Camp to Low Camp is about 3 hours and can be quicker if you are a quick hiker. Since it’s mostly downhill, you won’t have a hard time during the return.

We will stay in a teahouse at Low Camp and rest after a long day.

Meals:

B, L, D

The last day of our 5-day Mardi Himal Trek doesn’t involve much hiking. After breakfast at the teahouse, we hike down from Low Camp, and after 2 hours of downhill hike, we will reach Siding Village, from where we catch a vehicle back to Pokhara.

The drive takes around 2-3 hours, depending on the road conditions from Siding to Pokhara.

Once we return to Pokhara, our Trek concludes.

Additional Information

Food and Accommodation During the Mardi Himal Trek

You don’t need to worry about food and accommodation in the Mardi Himal Trek. The Mardi hiking route is fully equipped with cozy teahouses, and each of them has a proper menu with a variety of dish options to choose from.

The teahouses usually consist of small rooms with beds on twin twin-sharing basis. Most of them are equipped with electricity to charge your devices as well. Each bed consists of mattress, pillow and blankets.

While some tea houses may offer rooms with attached bathrooms, most of them are with a common bathroom.

These teahouses not only provide you with food and lodging but are also a great way to experience the local culture, support the local community, and also help in making your backpack lighter.

Food offered in the teahouses of Mardi Trail is mostly traditional Nepali dishes with a few other options. They offer vegetarian, vegan, and non-veg options, so you don’t need to  be worried about being hungry.

If you have special dietary requirements, then you need to inform your guide or trekking agency beforehand.

A few of the popular foods available during the Mardi Trek are:

  • Dal Bhat
  • Momo (veg/non veg)
  • Noodles

  • Thukpa
  • Sherpa Stew

Along with different food options, different kinds of drinks are also available, such as tea, coffee, juice, and beverages. We don’t recommend consuming alcohol, especially during high-altitude treks like Mardi Himal. However, drinking in limited amounts as a celebration at low altitudes is fine.

Permits Required for Mardi Himal Trek

Trekking in Nepal requires different permits depending on the area and the trekking route. Mardi Himal Trek is no exception. Unlike other treks, permits on this trek are simple. You require an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) as the trail lies in the Annapurna Conservation Area.

This permit costs NPR. 3000 and can be obtained from the Tourism Board office. If you book a trek with Hiking Bees, then all you necessary permits will be arranged by us, so that you don’t have to be involved in the hassle.
