This 14-day journey with 12 days of trek, will take you through stunning landscapes, including dense forests, rocky hills, and terraced rice fields, as well as sparkling mountain peaks that will leave you in awe.

Regarding the landscape, the terraced fields, lush green forests, and the stunning Gandaki River occupy the valley. These natural features make it a heavenly place to visit. It is worth exploring at least once in a lifetime.

One of the main attractions of the Tsum Valley Trek is the cultural richness that you will experience. The valley is home to ancient Tibetan villages that have been untouched by modernization, offering a glimpse into a way of life that has been preserved for centuries. The valley is also dotted with old monasteries, chortens, and Mani walls, which are decorated with prayer flags and inscribed with Buddhist mantras.

Along with local culture and traditions, you will also be rewarded with amazing views of the peaks. Some of the prominient peaks witnessed during the Tsum Valley Trek are:

Ganesh Himal Range

  • Yangra (Ganesh I, 7,422 m/24,350.39 ft)

  • Salasungo (Ganesh III, 7,043 m/23,106.96 ft)

The entire valley is considered a restricted area by the Nepalese government. Consequently, a guide is required for this trek, and there must be at least two people in your group (excluding the guide). For that, you should contact a local tour operator like Hiking Bees.

The trek shares the same route as the Manaslu Circuit Trek, from its starting point, Machha Khola Khola, to Nyak Phedi. From that point, the trail separates for these journeys.

Tsum Valley

Speaking about the Tsum Valley, the name ‘Tsum’ is believed to be derived from the Tibetan word ‘Tsombo’, which means ‘vivid’. The valley reflects its lively culture, rich traditions, and stunning landscapes to the visitors. It consists of 33 small settlements in total, and they’re divided into two sections: Lower Tsum and Upper Tsum.

Among all these beautiful villages, you’ll pass through only a few during the trek

  • Lokpa and Chumling of the Lower Tsum
  • Chhekampar and the Nile of the Upper Tsum

During your trek, you’ll meet an indigenous group of Tibetan origin, the Tsumbas, who inhabit the entire valley, and they speak the Tsumke language. You’ll find that the place is highly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and the Bon religion.

The lifestyle of the locals is spiritual and peaceful here. Therefore, the Tsum Valley is also known as ‘Shyagya’, indicating a place where there‘s no violence. They’re mostly religious, and apart from that, they engage in agriculture, cultivating barley, millet, and potatoes, as well as yaks herding.

Sacred Buddhist sites, Mu and Rachen Monasteries, are among the major attractions here for you to visit if you’re also more into religious kinds of things. They also hold significant value to the Bon people.

As more and more trekkers discover the beauty of the Tsum Valley, new tea houses are being built along the trail to accommodate the growing number of visitors. However, despite this development, the valley remains relatively untouched and retains its authentic charm.

Know, Before You Go

Know these essential information about the Tsum Valley Trek - 14 Days, before you head for the trek. These extra information will provide you a picture about what to expect and get prepared for your journey. Please feel free to read the information below and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

If you are still unsure if this trek is for you then email or WhatsApp us. We will get back to you within 24 hours to answer any more questions.

To prepare for a trek to the Tsum Valley, it’d be much better if you’re physically and mentally fit. Even without being fit for both things, you can still somehow manage to conclude this journey under the guidance of a trekking guide you hire.

Nevertheless, being physically and mentally fit for not only this but for any adventure is a best practice for a better outcome and to enjoy your trip to the fullest. Hence, some of the best workouts you can do for yourself as preparation for this trek, at least for an hour every day, a month before the date of your journey, are as follows:

Flexibility

Every exercise, either intense or light, should always start and end with stretching. Do it for at least five minutes both before and after the workout.

Doing it before a workout helps stretch your stiff muscles and reduce the risk of injury during exercise. And doing it also after you’re done with your workout for the day helps cool down your body.

It results in enhancing your body's flexibility and muscle recovery. Moreover, it improves blood flow to the muscle, among other benefits.

Cardiovascular Training

To build your stamina, endurance is the key. Workouts such as running, skipping, cycling, and swimming are the best. You can do either of these exercises for half an hour daily.

Strength Training

Upper-body exercise, such as pull-ups, push-ups, and planks, helps strengthen your shoulders and back. You can easily walk for hours in high-altitude locations like the Manaslu Region with a heavy backpack on your shoulders.

Another strength training is lower-body exercise, such as squats, lunges, and step-ups. These workouts help make your thighs and knees strong. When hiking with a heavy backpack on your shoulders often puts pressure on the part of your legs gradually, and the exercises mentioned here help prevent potential leg issues.

Hiking-Specific Conditioning

Besides these workouts mentioned above, also consider including hiking at least once a week during your day off. Hike to the hillside near your hometown by carrying a loaded backpack of at least 5 kg. Doing so will help you build foot and joint endurance.

Mental Preparation

Along with all these physical exercises, also add meditation for about 10-15 minutes daily in your free time. When doing it, keep your mind empty and imagine yourself hiking on the trail of the Tsum Valley, and overcoming every potential challenge. Just think about the beautiful landscapes of the villages in the valley and the visible mountains.

You should be cautious about the altitude that you will gain in the coming days during this trek. However, stay positive all the time and don’t overthink about difficulty of this trip. A positive mindset plays an important role in succeeding on the journey.

To reach the starting point of the Tsum Valley Trekking (Soti Khola or Machha Khola), there’s only one option available, and that’s by vehicle.

A public bus to Soti Khola can be taken from New Bus Park in Gongabu, Kathmandu. It takes approximately 7-8 hours to reach, varying depending on traffic on the highway.

You also have the option to opt for a private jeep directly from your hotel to Machha Khola. Private jeep tends to provide a much better experience compared to the local bus, and you can stop wherever you want on the way to see the views or waterfalls that lies on the way.
