Annapurna Circuit Trek Overview
Annapurna Circuit Trek ranges from Lamjung to Manang to Mustang, located in Gandaki Province in the Western Development Region of Nepal. However, most parts of the trek are located in Manang. Its highest point is Thorong La Pass, the world's highest pass in terms of trekking, which sits at an altitude of 5,416 m (17,769 ft).
The trek offers breathtaking views of the peaks in the Annapurna Range, such as:
- Annapurna I (8,091 m/26,545 ft)
- Annapurna II (7,937 m/26,040 ft)
- Machhapuchhre (6,993 m/22,943 ft)
- Gangapurna (7,455 m/24,459 ft)
- Tilicho Peak (7,134 m/23,406 ft)
- Pisang Peak (6,091 m/19,984 ft), etc.
Mount Manaslu (8,163 m/26,781 ft) is also visible on this trek, even though it's in another mountain range, Mansiri, as it's the neighboring mountain range of Annapurna. Apart from this, several beautiful lakes and waterfalls are there to draw your attention and make you stop for a while to take some pictures along the trail. They are:
- Green, Blue, and Gangapurna Lakes in Manang.
- Chyamche and Octopus Waterfalls in Lamjung.
Another major attraction is Tilicho Lake. It is considered the world's highest lake situated at an elevation of 4,919 m (16,138 ft). Actually, it isn't exactly the part of this trek. You'll need to take another route and again come back to the main trail leading to the Thorong La.
So, if you want to visit the lake, then it takes you an extra day. Anyway, it's not necessary to visit. However, most trekkers choose to go there during the Annapurna Circuit Trekking.
The entire trail is inhabited by mostly the Gurung people. They're one of the kindest ethnic groups in Nepal who follow Buddhism.
They've their own language and customs. As a result, if you're also interested in learning about religion, culture, and traditions while at the same time enjoying nature's beauty, then this trek could be a perfect match for you.
In addition, it lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Thus, you will also get the chance to witness some wildlife, such as snow leopards, blue sheep, thorny hawks, etc. during the trek.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Difficulty
The difficulty level of the Annapurna Circuit Trekking is moderate to challenging. It also varied depends on how experienced a hiker you are. If you've already done several treks before, then it ain't that hard for you to finish or else, you may feel demanding.
Nevertheless, the entire trial is not technical, except for the path that leads to Thorong Phedi on your second last day. There's a short landslide area, which takes around 30 minutes to go through.
Moreover, height is also a factor that can make this adventure challenging if you're a first-timer because you will be ascending to above 5,000 m (16,404.2 ft) above sea level.
Annapurna Circuit Trek Duration
The duration of the Annapurna Circuit Trail is generally 12 days long. But it also varies depending on the place you begin your journey. Nowadays, most trekkers start from Jagat (1,300 m/4,265 ft), Lamjung, and end their trip in Muktinath (3,710 m/12,170 ft), one of the sacred sites for both Hindus and Buddhists in Mustang.
In between the journey, Manang Town (3,440 m/11,286 ft) is a favorite to spend an extra day to acclimatize the body, it is necessary to do so once you make it up to 3,000 m (9,843 ft) while trekking. You can explore the town and visit the beautiful Gangapurna Lake that day.
So, including the acclimatization day, it takes a total of 12 days to complete. The duration also includes the drive from Kathmandu to Jagat on the first day, the drive from Muktinath to Pokhara after completing the trek, and the return drive to Kathmandu.
However, some trekkers begin their journey from places like Besisahar (760 m/2,493 ft), the headquarters of Lamjung, or Chame (2,720 m/8,923 ft), the headquarters of Manang. Doing so will take more or even less than the mentioned duration to conclude the trek.
What Is The Best Time For the Annapurna Circuit trek?
Regarding the best time for Annapurna Circuit Trekking, there are two seasons: spring and autumn. March to May fall in spring, while September to November fall in autumn. Now, you might be thinking why only these two seasons are considered the best times, and why not monsoon and winter?
To make it clear about your curiosity, below is the breakdown of the reasons that make spring and autumn the best seasons for trekking the Annapurna Circuit:
Spring
-
Temperatures are moderate, meaning that they are not too hot or too cold, making hiking much more pleasurable.
-
Although you might experience some haze in the valleys from time to time, mountains look outstanding, particularly in the early part of the day.
-
The Rhododendrons and various wildflowers are blooming bright and lively, resulting in brilliant colors along the trail.
-
There are also plenty of daylight hours, and you can hike longer hours without having to rush to make it to your destination before the daylight ends.
-
Local festivals, such as Holi (festival of colours), Nepalese New Year, and Buddha Jayanti (the birthday of Lord Buddha) occur in this season.
Autumn
-
The months that follow the summer monsoon are the best time of year in terms of clear mountain views, as the air is cleared of dust and pollutants.
-
Summer and autumn are the overall driest months, with little rain or snow making this a prime time for high-altitude trekking and crossings.
-
Daytime warmth and cool evenings are ideal temperatures for active pursuits - no real risk of overheating or freezing.
-
In Nepal, trekking in autumn may also coincide with large local festivals such as Dashain and Tihar, providing a wealth of cultural experience along with the natural experience of the mountains.
Now, I'm pretty sure that I helped you to move on from your curiosity about the reasons behind considering spring and autumn the best times for this adventure. But keep in mind that you should also be smart to stay tuned with the weather forecast while planning the Annapurna Circuit Trek and also, during the trek.
This is because as far as I reckon you already know the weather has no guarantee and could go against us. That is why staying updated with the forecast daily is important, and it helps us avoid any unfortunate circumstances related to climate.
What Is The Accommodation like On The Annapurna Circuit Trail?
As stated above, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the popular treks in Nepal. The trail receives more than thousands of tourists in each peak season. It's a commercialized trek.
That's why you don't need to worry about finding a proper hotel here for food and lodging. There are plenty of hotels and tea houses available throughout the trail.
All these hotel businesses are run by locals and have facilities for electricity, hot showers, and WiFi connections. From basic to standard rooms with attached bathrooms, you can find all types of accommodation, and the room costs vary accordingly.
In terms of food, a variety of options on the menu including Western cuisines are available in every tea house along the route, designed by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). You can have food of your choice.
We highly recommend you try local Nepalese foods, such as Dal Bhat, Momo, Chowmein, Thukpa, etc. while you're here. However, if you are only comfortable with your regular Western cuisines, then you can also go for it. It's up to you.
Please note that facilities, such as electricity and Wifi connection, aren't available at the hotel in Thorong High Camp. The same facilities also sometimes might not work properly at hotels in other places.
Anyway, we can at least have a proper room and food during the trip, making our adventure convenient. And at the same time, we can also appreciate the effort of the locals they're making for us.
Permits Required For The Annapurna Round Trek
There are two different permits you will require for the Annapurna Round Trek. They are as follows:
-
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): It is needed to enter the Annapurna Region, and its cost contributes to the development of the local community.
-
Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS): It is needed to track the tourists on the trail so that the government can provide help in case of emergency.
To obtain these permit cards, you don’t need to worry about. Actually, as per Nepal’s government law, tourists aren’t allowed to trek solo.
You must go through the local tour operators. They’ll arrange everything for you, such as accommodation, transportation, permits, an experienced guide, porter, etc., at an affordable price, making your journey hassle-free.

Preparation Tips For The Annapurna Circuit Trek
To successfully trek the Annapurna Circuit, you will need to be serious, focused, and fully prepared, physically, mentally, and in terms of gear and altitude. I've prepared a breakdown of these things below for your convenience.
Physical Preparation
Consider doing some basic exercises, such as stretching, squatting, and running every day for an hour at least a month before your journey if you ain't a regular workout person. These three workouts are best for trekking, as stretching loosens your stiff muscles, squatting strengthens your legs, and running builds stamina. Some other exercises like cycling and swimming are also very helpful.
Mental Preparation
Don't think too much and stay stress-free. Have positive feelings before and during the trek. It'll be much better if you also consider doing meditation along with physical exercises daily.
Gear And Packing
-
Bring waterproof hiking boots that are well broken in and warm, comfortable socks.
-
Bring a system of layers, such as base layers, fleece jackets, and a waterproof/windproof outer layer.
-
Bring a comfortable backpack that has weight distributed as designed and is loaded with what is needed.
-
Use trekking poles for stability and to lessen the strain on your legs.
-
Also remember to bring a bottle of water, water purification tablets, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a buff mask, and a first-aid kit.
Altitude Acclimatization
-
Don't rush while hiking. Ascend patiently, take frequent breaks of at least 7-8 minutes, and spend an extra day in the same place upon reaching above 3,000 m (9,843 ft). Doing so allows your body time to adjust at the high altitude locations.
-
Don't let your body dehydrate. Drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily during trekking to avoid altitude sickness. In addition, consume foods that have a high portion of water like apples, cucumbers, and watermelons.
-
Eat foods with high levels of carbohydrates like pasta, rice, and potatoes, as they provide you with long-lasting energy, helping you cover a long distance without any difficulty.
-
Don't ignore the common symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, trouble sleeping, nausea, etc. If you notice any of these happening to you, then descend immediately at least 500 m. Stay overnight there and the next day if you feel okay, you may continue your journey.
Other Essential Tips
-
Don't act smart unnecessarily. Listen to your guide every time until the end of your adventure.
-
Respect the local culture and environment.
-
Remember to bring enough cash for any unexpected or personal expenses and permit cards.
